Consumer sentiment improves for auto industry but urban buyers remain cautious: Motilal Oswal

OEMs see production normalising with continuous improvement in the supply chain.

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], Aug 28 (ANI): Wholesale volumes are estimated to grow at 3.6 per cent for two-wheelers and 16 per cent for passenger vehicles in August on account of sustained demand and inventory refilling, according to a report released by Motilal Oswal Financial Services on Friday.

However, volumes will decline by 49 per cent year-on-year for commercial vehicles (except Tata) due to low demand. Tractor volumes are expected to grow by 45 per cent on a low base and continued retail momentum.

The report said wholesale volume for August will be a mixed bag, reflecting demand fulfillment for certain models due to supply shortage and inventory refilling for other models.

Although some sporadic lockdowns are still observed, original equipment manufacturers (OEM) have largely adjusted to the new normal, and are matching supply with demand and slowly moving to inventory refilling.

Demand recovery has sustained on account of increasing preference for personal vehicles and high disposable incomes in the rural markets. For August, most of the OEM plants further improved utilisation on a month-on-month basis.

The majority of entry-level passenger vehicle customers and urban two-wheeler customers are purchasing vehicles for safety purposes, who otherwise may have avoided the purchase.

Commercial vehicles are seeing demand only from the infrastructure and construction sector which accounts for 30 per cent of total sales.

The overall consumer sentiment has improved but urban customers remain cautious given the uncertain environment.

Tractor demand remains strong with retail growth in most of the markets. However, three-wheeler demand is still very low, further affected by stringent financing norms and a low business environment for the owner or operator.

Demand normalisation is the biggest monitorable with multiple moving parts in the form of normalisation of the supply side, consumer sentiment, availability of finance and impact of BS-VI cost inflation. Valuations reflect a recovery from H2 FY21, leaving a limited margin for safety for any negative surprises.

Hence, companies with, higher visibility in terms of demand recovery, a strong competitive positioning, margin drivers and balance sheet strength are preferred. M&M and Eicher Motors are top large-cap picks while mid-cap picks are Motherson Sumi and Endurance Technologies. (ANI)

Washington [US], August 28 (ANI): China along with three other countries had submitted data that was "inappropriately altered", which led to the World Bank putting a pause on its 'Doing Business' report.

China along with three other countries -- Azerbaijan, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia-- appeared to have been inappropriately altered their data, as per a person with knowledge of the decision, reported the Wall Street Journal on Thursday.

The move renewed concerns first raised two years ago by the World Bank's chief economist that the report, called "Doing Business," was vulnerable to manipulation.
According to the Doing Business report, a sharp difference was noted when China's rose from 46 to 31 between 2019 to 2020.

The World Bank in a statement said that certain "irregularities have been reported" regarding changes to the data in the Doing Business 2018 and Doing Business 2020 reports, published in October 2017 and 2019.

"A number of irregularities have been reported regarding changes to the data in the Doing Business 2018 and Doing Business 2020 reports, published in October 2017 and 2019. The changes in the data were inconsistent with the Doing Business methodology. The integrity and impartiality of our data and analysis are paramount and so we are immediately taking actions," The World Bank said in a statement.

The statement added, "We are conducting a systematic review and assessment of data changes that occurred subsequent to the institutional data review process for the last five Doing Business reports. We have asked the World Bank Group's independent Internal Audit function to perform an audit of the processes for data collection and review for Doing Business and the controls to safeguard data integrity."

"The publication of the Doing Business report will be paused as we conduct our assessment," said the World Bank.

India had jumped 14 positions to be ranked 63rd among 190 countries in the World Bank's ease of doing business 2020 survey. (ANI)

Reskilling, up-skilling key CSR tectics to tackle a post-COVID world: CII Panel

New Delhi [India] Aug 28 (ANI/NewsVoir): Skill development is one of the best means to achieve sizeable impact and derive strategic imperatives from CSR agenda especially in the challenging times of COVID-19, according to an esteemed panel that discussed "Skill Development through CSR" in a webinar organized by CII, North Region.

Digital platforms across verticals like healthcare, education, retail are expected to generate significant employment in coming quarters and the pace at which innovation in skill-building is adopted to such online models is critical in the wake of new emerging realities.

Batting for strong inter-agency partnerships and bridging the digital divide, the panelists agreed that COVID has changed the way resources are allocated in CSR.
The renewed focus is on employability that leads to employment which further leads to economic upliftment. India is aiming to become a five-trillion-dollar economy and enjoys a strong advantage of vast and young demographic that stands at a crossover of the digital leap.

By 2023, 70 million more people will have entered India's workforce (data from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2017-2018. Unemployment concerns have shot up in India off late due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"COVID-19 poses special challenges for skill development. Today when the world faces a crisis, the government, corporates, and implementing agencies are turning to CSR. Promoting education, special education, employment-enhancing vocational skills is the need of the hour and our law has been successful in addressing that.

Difficulty in skilling, re-skilling, and people's employment are some of the key challenges we need to address. The government must now act as a facilitator and encourage corporates to go more into the skill development. We also need to meet the dynamic needs of the employers by offering flexibility in the courses being designed, certifications being offered, and the way we train our resources. The need of the hour is to tap into technology to leap-frog youth of today into employability," said Dr Bhaskar Chatterjee Former Secretary, Government of India, and Former Director General & CEO- IICA, Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs in his address.

"COVID-19 and the global lockdown has impacted the skills ecosystem, resulting in an imbalance in the skills landscape. There is a dire need to skill, upskill and multi-skill a huge workforce so there is suitable employability. An effective means to do this is through CSR funds. Govt of India, the corporate industry with their funds and the implementing agencies along with consulting agencies are the umbilical link to an effective skilling programme," said Brigadier PK Goyal (Retd), Conference Chair and Member, Regional Committee on Skill Development and Livelihood, CII Northern Region while addressing the opening session.

"A good thing, at present, is that the government has accepted that skilling is a challenge and they are trying to address the gap. We have been advising a skilling program which is Cooperative, Collaborative, Inclusive, and Adaptive. If we use technology, such an initiative becomes easier. Training can be normalized across the country, using technology. We can combine Make in India, Digital India, and Skill India, as complementary models and CSR plays a major role in supporting this initiative. We can create co-skilling spaces, with soft and IT skills at the entry-level segment, generic sector skills at the next level of the segment, and the third level is the vaulted training centres where domain knowledge is imparted by industry experts," added Lt Gen Dr SP Kochhar, Director General - COAI (Cellular Operators Association of India).

The webinar also included eminent speakers like Dr Sudhir Kapur, Chairman, Regional Committee on Skill Development & Livelihood, CII Northern Region, Anita Rajan, CEO, Tata Strive, R Anand, Principal Consultant & Advisor - HR, HCL Tech Ltd, Chetan Kapoor, COO, Tech Mahindra Foundation, Dhanashree Page Head Operations, Digital Inclusion, CSR, Capgemini India, Romira Roy, Executive Director & Founder SEED, Ashish Singh, Head - ITI Projects, Maruti Suzuki India Lt, Meenu Bagla, VP and CMO, Cyient Ltd, Rahul Agarwal, AVP-Finance, Goodera, Mahesh Munjal, Co-Chair Regional Committee on Skill Development and Livelihood, CII Northern Region & CMD, Majestic Auto and Arun Nalavadi, ED - Sustainability and Partnerships, Magic Bus India Foundation.

Rajnath Singh to induct Rafales on Sept 10, French Defence Minister also invited for event

File photo of Rafale fighter aircraft at Ambala Air Force Station, Haryana

New Delhi [India], Aug 28 (ANI): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will formally induct the five Rafale fighter aircraft into the Indian Air Force (IAF) on September 10 at the Ambala air base in Haryana in a ceremony for which French Defence Minister Florence Parly would also be invited.

Defence sources told ANI that the induction ceremony would be held after the return of the Defence Minister from Russia where he is scheduled to attend the meeting of the Defence Ministers of the member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation from September 4 to 6.

"The Rafale aircraft induction ceremony would be held on September 10 with the Defence Minister as the Chief Guest. The French Defence Minister is also being sent an invite to attend the event to mark the strategic friendship between India and France," the sources said.

Five Rafale fighter aircraft arrived in India from France on July 29 and have started extensive training within 24 hours of touching down in the country. The French-origin fighter aircraft are part of the 17 Golden Arrows squadron of the Air Force.

The fighter aircraft have already flown over the Ladakh region and have been familiarising with the terrain over which they have to fly in different parts of the country. The five Rafales which have arrived in the country include three single-seaters and two twin-seaters.

The Rafales armed with the air-to-air Meteor, air to ground SCALP and Hammer missiles are expected to give an edge to the Indian Air Force over its traditional adversaries China and Pakistan in the South Asian skies due to its long-range hit capabilities.

India has contracted for 36 Rafales under the largest-ever defence deal signed by the country worth over Rs 60,000 crore of which the majority payments have already been made to the French firm Dassault Aviation.

The deal was signed in September 2016 with Manohar Parrikar as the Defence Minister, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and the then Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in 2018-2019 played a significant role in defending the deal when the opposition alleged corruption in the project before the general elections in April-May last year.

When Rajnath Singh became Defence Minister, he went to France to accept the first Rafale for India in October 2019 on the auspicious festival of Dussehra and also flew in the aircraft which was accepted after performing 'pooja' with traditional Hindu rituals.

India has a requirement of more than 300 fighter aircraft of different types in the next 10-12 years which is planned to be met with from both Indian and foreign sources. (ANI)

Washington D.C. [US], August 28 (ANI/Sputnik): Democratic vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris in a speech on Thursday defended the ongoing nationwide protests against racial injustice and slammed President Donald Trump on his response to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic in the United States.

Racially-charged protests were refueled on Sunday after a viral video showed African American Jacob Blake being shot in the back seven times by a police officer.

"People are rightfully angry and exhausted," Harris said in her rebuttal speech to the Republican National Convention (RNC). "After the murders of Breonna [Taylor] and George [Floyd] and Ahmaud [Arbery]and so many others, it's no wonder people are taking to the streets, and I support them. We must always defend peaceful protests and peaceful protesters."

Harris further said that peaceful protesters must not be confused with looters and rioters, including the 17-year-old shooter arrested and charged with murder.

"We will not let these vigilantes and extremists derail the path to justice," Harris said.

Harris said she and Joe Biden talked to Blake's family on Wednesday and discussed the need to heal the country.

In addition, Harris also said Trump has failed to protect the American people with his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Harris said Trump had a "reckless disregard" towards the pandemic and that his incompetence has become deadly, citing the 180,000 US COVID-19 deaths and the more than 5.8 million cases that have been reported in the country.

The final night of the semi-virtual RNC will begin Wednesday night at 8:30 pm EST (0030 GMT on Thursday). Trump will deliver his nomination acceptance speech from the south lawn of the White House. (ANI/Sputnik)

He also noted that the hurricane proved far last destructive than was predicted before it made landfall.
